Orienteering Season At State Park
Orienteering Season At State Park
Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will hold its first event of the season on Sunday, March 25, at Paugussett State Park in Newtown. Registration and starts will run continuously from 10 am to noon.
The parkâs entrance is off Dingle Brook Lane. A bike-orienteering course will be set if snow cover permits; otherwise longer and easy standard courses for spring training will be available. All are welcome. Instruction and compasses will be available.
Fee is $5 per person. Contact Joe Brautigam at 790-7571 or joebrautigam@hotmail.com for pre-registration or additional information.
Mr Brautigam will be setting up the event. Participants will use an orienteering map and the compass to find their way across the terrain, seeking orange and white flags at various land features.
The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.
Participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag.
In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time. Instruction and training will be available for beginners.
