Iris Rosen will present two programs, both sponsored by Newtown Parks & Recreation, on Saturday, March 20.

The first is “Well Being Forest Bathing & Nature Jar,” planned for 11 am to 12:15 pm. It is suitable for ages 11 and up.

Those planning to participate should meet at the pavilion at Fairfield Hills, near Glander Field along Mile Hill Road South. The entire event will take place outside, so dress accordingly.

“Forest bathing” is a Japanese term for a walk in the woods, known to lift one’s mood, build immune system, and reduce stress, while also helping heart health. During the mindful forest bathing walk, participants will do some light body moment, grounding techniques, and meditation, along with nature photography.

Research states that even viewing images of nature is soothing and balancing, which is why Rosen is including that in her class.

“Let us learn from nature, its wisdom, its gifts and benefits and bring that into our lives, to shift and keep the energy positive, healthy, and happy,” she said.

Following the walk, the group will return to the pavilion to enjoy herbal tea while creating nature jars. Materials will include various aromatic herbs such as lavender, rose, rosemary, and sage, as well as various crystals, essential oils, and Himalayan sea salt, all to be bundled into a mini glass jar with a lid.

Participants will have the option to choose between inspirational charms and a string to hang as a necklace or pendant.

CDC guidelines will be followed for COVID-19 prevention, including wearing face masks and observing social distancing.

Cost is $90, registration is required. This is Activity 303503A.

Rosen’s second workshop that day will be “Terrarium Building,” which will also take place at the Fairfield Hills pavilion.

This class will run from 1 to 2 pm, and is also for ages 11 and up.

Participants will learn the history of terrariums, various types and styles, and proper care.

Rosen will showcase a variety of terrariums suitable for different seasons and spaces. Students will then create and take home their own terrariums after working with location-available plant materials.

Cost for this program is $85, and registration is also required (Activity 303504A).
