Douglas G. Hubert

Life Member Of American Society Of Mechanical Engineers, Avid Outdoorsman

Douglas G. Hubert, 92, husband of Margery (Smith) Hubert of Newtown and formerly of Yonkers, N.Y., and West Hartford, died March 7 in Danbury Hospital. Mr Hubert was born in 1913 in New York City, son of Warren and Florence Hubert, and lived in Yonkers until 1960.

He is survived by his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard G. and Patricia Hubert of Newtown, and a daughter and son-in-law, Margery H. and Kenyon Wells of Somerset, N.J. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Carolyn H. and husband, John Murray, of Saranac Lake, N.Y., Christopher Hubert of Medford, Mass., Edward Wells of Greenbelt, Md., and Kathleen Wells of Somerset, N.J; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle Murray, Julia Murray, and Ryan Murray of Saranac Lake, N.Y.

Mr Hubert graduated from Cornell University in 1935 as a mechanical engineer and received his master’s degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1942. He worked for Combustion Engineering Company for 38 years as a contract engineer for construction of fossil fuel power plants. As manager of foreign licensees he traveled worldwide handling contracts, licensing, and engineering problems until his retirement in 1978. He was a licensed professional engineer, taught graduate courses for engineers studying for their licenses, and wrote text books for those courses.

In 1941 he married Margery Smith of Yonkers. They had two children, Richard and Margery, and lived in the Crestwood section of Yonkers until their move to West Hartford, in 1960. The Huberts were members of Asbury Crestwood United Methodist Church in Yonkers and the First Church of Christ Congregational in West Hartford.

Mr Hubert was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and an active member of the West Hartford Regents. He was a lifetime summer resident of Tupper Lake, N.Y. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, camper, hiker, and an expert canoeist. His hobbies included many years of amateur theatrical work, photography, art, and music.

A memorial service will be scheduled later.

At the family’s request, memorial donations may be made in the name of Douglas G. Hubert to Newtown Ambulance Association, PO Box 344, Newtown CT 06470.

Arrangements were handled by Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
