The Power Of The People
The Power Of The People
To the Editor:
Last Monday was an amazing evening for the nearly 100 people who attended an informal âStop The Condosâ open house at the Mocha Coffee House in Sandy Hook. Attendees learned the specifics of the proposal to build 23 condos on four acres on Church Hill Road, signed a petition against a zone change for 95-99 Church Hill Road, and most importantly came together as a community.
Much of the heart and soul of Sandy Hook lies in the interesting mix of historic commercial buildings, charming vintage homes, and the passion of the people who live in and near this hamlet. When an out-of-town developer completely disregards the character of the town and its residents, it is inspiring when people fight back and become part of a collective and organized group.
In the next few weeks it is imperative for those who wish to protect our town to write letters to elected officials, sign the circulating petition, and attend as many public hearings as possible. We are launching a website, www.stopthecondos.com, in the next week to provide a resource for residents wishing to protect the rural and historic character of Newtown and Sandy Hook. Another informational open house is scheduled for Monday, April 3, at the Mocha Coffee House from 7 to 8:30 pm. Remember it is we, the residents of Sandy Hook and Newtown, who can and will determine the future landscape of this town we call home.
