When the Western New England College womenâs basketball team dropped a 74-71 decision to Emmanuel College in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England championship, the stellar collegiate career of Lisa Masella finally came to an end. And in the end, she finished with 1,289 points (fifth on the WNEC all-time list) and 968 rebounds (second all-time) â averaging 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds a game in a senior year that saw her named to the All-Cardinal Classic Team (on November 20), the All-Pioneer Valley Womenâs Hoop Classic Team (on December 3), the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll (on January 16 and January 30) and the All-GNAC Second Team (on February 27) as the Golden Bears finished 21-7 overall. In the loss to Emmanuel College, Masella â who averaged 11.8 points per game in 109 career contests â tossed in 13 points as teammate Jen Dabrowski of Plainville poured in a career-high 33 points. For the 2005-06 season, Masella started all 28 games and averaged 25.4 minutes a contest with a strong .573 shooting percentage (133-of-232 from the floor). She dished off 40 assists, recorded 33 steals and blocked 27 shots on the season. Of her 211 rebounds, 137 were on the defensive side of the floor and 74 were offensive ⦠Now that WNEC has moved on to spring sports, itâs time for Chris Body, a 2004 graduate of Newtown High School, to take center stage as the starting goaltender of the menâs lacrosse team. Body made 17 saves and registered the win when WNEC blasted Hartwick, 17-9, in a non-conference contest at All-Weather Field in Oneonta, New York. The Golden Bears trailed 4-2 after the opening period before exploding for seven unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead at half-time. Body, meanwhile, turned away eight shots to keep the Hawks off the board. The Bears are 3-1 after wins over Union College (17-3), Hartwick and Wittenburg University of Ohio (10-1) last Saturday in Sanford, Florida. In the first two games of the year, Body logged a little over 118 minutes and made 21 saves (needing to make just four in the win over Union). He has a 6.06 goals-against average and .636 save percentage ⦠Freshman diver Tierney Carey has performed well for the St. Michaelâs College swim team. In a 221-59 win over Norwich back on January 31, Carey notched 159.05 points and finished second in the one-meter diving and then scored 155.25 points and finished first in the one-meter diving in a 125-100 win over Saint Rose on January 21. In a 139-85 win over Bentley back on January 14, Carey scored 185.10 points and finished third to a pair of Bentley divers ⦠Freshman Amy Robinson has starting making her mark with the University of Vermont swim team. In UVMâs 131-111 win over Providence on January 28, Robinson swam to a 29.80 finish in the 50-meter freestyle and claimed third. In a 168-130 loss to Stony Brook/124-87 win over St. Peterâs on January 21, Robinson helped lead the UVM 200-yard freestyle B relay to a third place finish of 1:49.10 (with a 27.29 time in her 50-yard split). And in a 131-87 win over Sacred Heart back on January 14, Robinson â who now swims with former rival Lauren Honrath of Masuk â took fourth at 27.09 in the 50-yard freestyle ⦠Christina Wolf is a freshman infielder for the Southern Connecticut State University womenâs softball team ⦠Megan Regnery is a freshman member of the Sacred Heart University womenâs lacrosse team and has appeared in one game for the Lady Pioneers â who have dropped their first four games to Davidson (17-8), Marist (12-8), Brown (14-4) and Holy Cross (11-4) ⦠Casey Kirch is a junior middie with the Sacred Heart University menâs lacrosse team and has appeared in both games thus far with one shot on goal and one ground ball. SHU lost to Manhattan (6-5) and Colgate (12-10). The Pioneers were in Colorado this week to face Air Force (Colorado Springs) and Denver (Denver) ⦠John Oliver is a sophomore attackman for the St. Maryâs College of Maryland menâs lacrosse team â which is 3-1 with wins over Farmingdale State (19-8), No. 6 ranked Roanoke (9-5) and Kingâs College (19-4) and a loss to No. 7 Washington College (10-3). Oliver has appeared in two games with a goal, three shots, and one ground ball. His goal came in the 19-4 win over Kingâs College on March 9 ⦠Edmund Breitling â former wrestler at Newtown High School â is now a sophomore member of the Western Connecticut State University menâs rugby team. The team opens is spring season on April 1 (TBA) and April 8 against Keene State and SCSU ⦠Nick Magoulas is a freshman catcher with the Eastern Connecticut State University junior varsity baseball team. He was a catcher/first baseman at Newtown High and served as senior captain â hitting .408 â for a team that earned its first state playoff berth in 10 years.
