Load Up On Carbs Before Hiking––

Lions Firing Up Griddles For Pancake Breakfast Saturday

Grab a fork and a hiking stick because there will be a full plate of food and activities this Saturday morning at the Newtown United Methodist Church at 92 Church Hill Road.

The Newtown Lions Club in conjunction with the Leo Club from Newtown High School is sponsoring a pancake breakfast from 7 am to noon to benefit the greenway trail through Newtown known as Al’s Trail, now being developed.

The Lions have taken on a major role in the sponsorship of the trail project and when not serving pancakes they will be unveiling a model of the kiosk designed by architect Roger Ball. The kiosk will be built behind the church along the trail route, and it will serve as an important rest stop along the eight-mile continuous path through the town.

When completed, Al’s Trail will connect open spaces in the Upper Paugussett State Forest to the Intermediate School at Fairfield Hills.

At 10 am, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the kiosk, which will be dedicated to Al Goodrich for whom the trail is named. Mr Goodrich, who died in January at age 83, was a longtime Newtown resident and retired engineer who helped conceive the trail route. He hiked it, mapped it, and led the ongoing effort to gain permissions for crossings on private, utility, or state-owned land. Mr Goodrich’s sons, David Goodrich of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and Gary Goodrich of Anchorage, Alaska, will be present for the ceremony.

At 9 am and again at 10 am after the groundbreaking, there will be short, guided hikes of the trail segments leading north and south from the Methodist Church parking lot.

The southern hike will traverse a newly mapped crossing under I-84 along the Pootatuck River to where Deep Brook joins the Pootatuck at Fairfield Hills.

The northern hike will follow a partially completed segment of Al’s Trail that enters Rocky Glen State Park via Dayton Street.

Members of the Newtown Hikers Club will also be present to support the benefit breakfast being sponsored by the Lions Club.

Cost for the breakfast is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children 12 and under, and no charge for children 5 and under.
