Newtown Winter Guards Continue Success

Continuing to hold on to first place during the closing weeks of the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) season, all three divisions of Newtown Winter Guard came home with top honor trophies after the Saturday, March 17, competition at Norwalk High School.

The event was the final MAC competition before the March 31 championships, to be held at Trumbull High School.

The Newtown High School Varsity Guard faced its closest rival, Arlington, for the first time in several weeks as a result of Arlington also competing in US Bands Winter Guard.

The NHS Varsity Guard came away with the victory, scoring 1.3 points more than Arlington and more than four points above Danbury and Trumbull in the National Scholastic A Division. Newtown and Arlington will both compete in this Saturday’s Winter Guard International (WGI) two-day regional competition in New Brunswick, N.J., on the road to the WGI Championships in April.

Facing its closest rival, Cheshire High School Varsity Guard, the Newtown Junior Varsity, competing in the Scholastic AA class, bested Cheshire and six other high schools to take home the first place trophy.

Scoring a season-high 83.5, Newtown was ranked a full point ahead of Cheshire, which had bested the Newtown Junior Varsity in a previous outing.

The eight-member Newtown Junior Winter Guard once again defeated Bethel Junior Guard, this time by a margin of .4, scoring a 78.6.

Both the Newtown Junior and Junior Varsity guard will travel to Bunnell High School in Stratford this Saturday, March 24, for a US Bands competition.
