A Night Of Tastes And Talents

To the Editor:

Of all the people who made A Night of Tastes and Talents a success last Saturday evening, the talent played the greatest role. The 7th Annual Dinner Dance to benefit Newtown Youth Services showcased local young performers from local middle and high schools.

The band Kaos introduced the evening’s entertainment and got us all moving (Chris and Tony Fragoso on electric guitar, Alex Fleming on drums, Kyle Kearney on bass). To introduce the dinner hour, the Bethel-based group Clearview’s performance included an original song (Dan Benitez vocal and guitar, Kevin Downey on drums).

During dinner, the Newtown High School Singers, under the director of John Harned, hushed the crowd with a perfectly pitched a cappella medley that brought down the house. Soloist Caitlin Anderson from Newtown Middle School sang “Memory,” accompanying herself on the guitar, a poignant and moving performance. Danny Bittman of Reed School got the crowd rocking with “Dream On” on electric guitar and his spectacular finale jump.

Next came four extremely talented cast members of How to Succeed in Business (Nathaniel Basch-Gould, Melanie Beck, Greg Gordon, and Samantha Mitchell) with vocal sneak previews of the Newtown High School musical comedy scheduled for April 6–8. Judging by the preview, no one will want to miss this show.

The wrap-up group of the evening was The Final Cut (Tim Larsen and Chris Waters on guitar, David Garcia vocals, and Josue Higeures drums), who are on their way to a regional band competition — good luck, guys!

We want to thank everyone who made A Night of Tastes and Talents the memorable event it was, but special thanks go to Bob Tendler, master of ceremonies, who kept it all going smoothly; Peter Obre, music man extraordinaire; Town and Country Garden Club members Arline Shanley, Maureen Rohmer, Marianne Muskus, and Joyce Webster for the lovely decorations; Jim Loring for his video production; and the wonderful staff of Newtown Youth Services.

The evening’s table sponsors included Attorneys Celia Barnum & Timothy Holian, Dudley, Condon, and Golisano, Hometown Publishing, Nanavaty, Nanavaty & Davenport, Old Heidelberg Restaurant, Southbury Academy of Karate & Fitness, Wachovia Bank, Holcomb Fuel, Washington Mutual, Webster Bank, and US Marketing, Ltd. We also give grateful thanks to the many local businesses and professionals who donated gift certificates and auction items. These merchants give Newtown Youth Services the opportunity to raise funds and showcase young people at the same time. We know how many causes you support, and our hats are off to you!

Special recognition goes to our event sponsors, without whom this evening couldn’t happen– Associated Refuse, Coldwell Banker, Bob Tendler Real Estate, Bryson Filbert, DMD, The Fireside Inn, Dr Henry Gellert, attorny Michael B. Nahoum, Newtown Insurance Service, Newtown Savings Bank, Ray Ruzek, CPA, CCM, Savings Bank of Danbury, SMT Corporation, and The Taunton Press.

Gratefully yours,

Chris Gardner, Chairman
