Join The 2006 Relay For Life
To the Editor:
As the Team Recruitment/Youth Chair for the 2006 Relay For Life of Newtown, I would like to extend a tremendous thank you to the 60 teams who have already made a commitment to this yearâs event. These teams have begun their fundraising efforts with over $13,000 currently raised online. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Societyâs signature activity. It is a unique event that offers communities the opportunity to participant in the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 people camp out at Newtown High School and take turns walking the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay For Life is a community event; anyone can participate. After dark, a luminaria ceremony is held where candles are lit in honor of or in remembrance of those who have been touched by cancer. This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease. Money is raised through team commitment fees of $10 a person and team and individual fundraising and sponsorship. Each participate is expected to raise a minimum of $100.
Relay is also a venue for interactive education and informed delivery. Participants learn about the American Cancer Society, its programs, and ways to prevent cancer.
This yearâs relay will take place at Newtown High School on Saturday and Sunday, June 10â11, from 7 pm to 7 am. Our committee is hard at work to provide a fun and inspirational event once again this year. Even if you cannot participate on a team this year, please mark your calendars and come out and support our teams and honor our survivors by walking a lap or two.
If you are interested in learning more about forming a team, please feel free to contact Dawn Escoda at 270-7541 or gme_2001@yahoo.com. You can also sign up online at our website, acsevents.org/relay/ctnewtown.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, 7 to 8 pm, at the high school lecture hall.
Thank you,
Dawn Escoda
