Kindergartener Shares The Spotlight

With His Furry Friends

By Susan Coney

Christopher Faxon, a kindergartener in Jen Pirone’s class at Hawley School, recently celebrated his sixth birthday party in an unusual way: by asking friends and family to make donations to The Animal Center instead of bringing him birthday gifts.

Christopher celebrated his birthday with a Harry Potter-themed party on Saturday, March 11, in the gym at Edmond Town Hall. Christopher got the idea of collecting donations for The Animal Center from his older sister Julia, who asked for donations in lieu of gifts to be given to the Newtown Fund when she turned 8 last December.

The Animal Center is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for unwanted cats and kittens. Its goal is to help end companion animal homelessness and prevent cruelty to animals in Newtown and the broader Connecticut community by providing services that foster the bond between humans and animals.

Donations from the party raised more than $100 in gift cards, 100-plus pounds of kitten and cat food, as well as dozens of kitty toys, treats, and play things.

Christopher’s mother Carolyn said, “The best part of it was the kids who came to the party were so excited to buy and bring gifts for cats and kittens. Christopher has an added incentive to help the center because we are going to adopt two kittens later this spring. He is so excited. The center always has a lot of kittens up for adoption in the spring time.”
