Newtown High School Career Center Lists Available Scholarships
The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.
The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.
Financial Planning Association Scholarship â One $1,000 scholarship award is available to a college-bound high school senior from a public school who is a US citizen from Fairfield County and interested in pursuing a course of study that will result in a degree in business, accounting, or related business field and lead to a possible career in financial planning. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, character, financial need, and career potential. Applications must be postmarked by April 4 and received by April 7.
Newtown Babe Ruth Girls Softball Scholarship â One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior girl who has played girls softball in Newtown. A transcript and a 300-word essay on âHow softball or sport programs influenced my lifeâ are required with the application. The Career Center has applications. The deadline for this scholarship is April 13.
Visiting Nurse Association of Newtown, Inc. â The VNA is offering the Anna E. Clow Scholarship for $4,000 to a Newtown student entering a nursing program leading to a BSN or RN. The $4,000 will be awarded when the recipient has entered the clinical portion of the nursing program. The Mary M. Holian Scholarship is for $2,000. Financial need, scholarship, personality, and recommendations are considered. Interviews will also be scheduled at NHS Career Center on April 27. Applications are due in the Career Center by April 24.
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International â A $300 book grant will be awarded to a senior graduating from a high school in the greater Danbury area who wishes to pursue a career in the field of education. The Career Center has applications. The deadline is April 25.
USS Connecticut Scholarship Program â This program was named for the State of Connecticutâs Flagship vessel, the submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22). The ship presents several scholarships annually to eligible members of the present and past crew or their dependents, and to eligible citizens of the state who plan to study at a Connecticut college or university.
All scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic merit and involvement in relevant academic, civic, professional and cultural organizations. Funding for this yearâs awards will total $15,000. The application deadline is May 15.
