Like Vermeer? Drive To Greenwich

GREENWICH — If you enjoyed seeing the movie The Girl With The Pearl Earring that recently completed a successful two-week run at Newtown’s Edmond Town Hall theater, you should consider traveling south to Greenwich to the Bruce Museum and attending an exhibit in partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin that is now open to the public. It will remain up until May 2.

The Bruce Museum exhibit is titled “Love Letters: Dutch Genre Painting in the Age of Vermeer,” and it includes a collection of 38 17th Century Dutch masterpieces on loan from private collectors and major museums in the United States and Europe.

One of the show’s highlights is Johannes Vermeer’s “Lady Writing A Letter With Her Maidservant.”

A docent-guided tour for the public is available on Fridays at 12:30 pm. Admission rates are $15 for adults and $14 for seniors. On Tuesdays, admission is free of charge, but donations are requested.

The Bruce Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm.

“I highly recommend the tour led by one of our docents,” said museum spokesman Allegra Harrington.

“All other viewings would be self-guided. The tour takes approximately 40 minutes. We’ve had a very good flow of people, and it has been very crowded on the weekends and on Tuesdays.”

There is also a catalog on the exhibit available at the museum gift shop for $30, written by Bruce Museum curator Dr Peter Sutton, who was formerly with the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford.

To reach the Bruce Museum, travel south on I-95 to Exit 3, take a left turn off the ramp, go through three lights, and the museum is on the left. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, according to Ms Harrington. For further information, call 203-869-0376.
