As of Thursday, March 11, Newtown High School collected $8,488 in pay-to-participate fees.
Approximately $1,300 was to have been collected from the schoolâs chapter of Junior Statesmen of America, a national organization for students interested in politics, but this amount will be lower, according to social studies teacher and club advisor Randi Kiely, who said a few of the clubâs original 40 members dropped out.
âWe lost a few students halfway through the year because they didnât want to pay,â she said. âRight now we have 35 students.â
A $40 fee per extracurricular activity was approved last spring by the school board following a $1.4 million cut to the Board of Educationâs original 2003-04 budget proposal.
The Board originally was expected to save about $35,000 through pay-to-participate. But last November, the school board modified the $40 fee to cover multiple activities, including intramural sports, after some Newtown High School students vehemently opposed the activity fees.
The Board expected to collect about $11,000; now they expect to collect a total of $9,400.
The total amounts collected were $2,996 for the band, $680 for the color guard, $1,814 from the Drama Club, $733 from the Madrigal Singers, $300 from the string ensemble, $160 from the Debate Team, $525 from the jazz band, $80 from Quiz Bowl participants, $360 from the Art Club and $480 from the Markettes.
