First Grade Schedule

By Walter Murphy

Mrs Attanasio’s class is putting everything they’ve got into their work. They are one of the busiest first grade classes in the school. They are having fun and learning a lot in their class. They don’t even get too much homework.

In their writing and reading they are working very hard. Mrs Attanasio’s current goals are getting all the kids to read chapter books. In writing, the class is learning all about tongue twisters and how to use them. They even get to write them.

In math, these young scholars are learning one digit subtraction. They are also learning all about patterns. They’ve already mastered one digit addition and are now working on two-digit addition. The students are really enjoying their pattern work. They are also learning to use digital and non-digital clocks.

Mrs Attanasio’s class loves science so they work especially hard in this subject. They are learning all about clouds and weather. They have seen a few videos on weather and what makes weather. They were all fascinated. This class is also working on liquids and solids. What sinks, what doesn’t and why.

That’s just about it in a nutshell. It looks like these students are working very hard and being successful. They are learning a lot and are having fun. Personally I think that every one of these students will be ready for second grade.

Matt Schaniel took a survey of the Hawley School community to see what they would like to see go into the Grand Union space once the business is closed. It seems the students would like to see a clothing store enter the vacant space in the future. Matt then graphed what the results of the survey were.

An Art Sensation

By Nick Haylon

As you might have heard, the Hawley School art show has rolled into town. But, what is it? What is this art show all about? Read on.

Let’s have a talk with Mrs Sheskin, Hawley’s art teacher, who is in charge of the art show. First, we want to know what pieces of art are going on display for each grade. Her answers: the first grade classes are displaying shape family paintings, Newtown Boogie-Woogies, fancy fruit bowls, gingerbread cookie people and watercolor suns. The second grade classes are entering autumn landscapes, gingerbread houses, watercolor clowns and African masks. The third graders have decided on scratch board flower vases, studies in symmetry, modern day florescent masks and cut paper loons. The fourth graders are displaying cartoon blowups, collage clowns, circus animals and clay loons. The fifth graders are entering animal portraits, bubble letter names, contour drawings and about the artists (descriptive paragraphs about themselves). Every grade will also have made a paper mache piece.

Mrs Sheskin thinks that the art show will turn out wonderful. This year’s art show will be a little different than last year’s. Instead of Mrs Sheskin selecting the kids’ artwork, this year the kids will be picking their own pieces. Then, a lot of moms will be coming in to hang up all the work. “It’s the highlight of the year for me,” says Mrs Sheskin, “I love seeing all that we have accomplished over the year and how creative our students are.”

So, all you Hawley participants, please join us on May 1 at 6 pm and see if what we say is true.
