Gardener Of The Year Will Be In Southbury On April 6

SOUTHBURY — Southbury Garden Club will have its next meeting on Friday, April 6, in Room 205 of Southbury Town Hall. The guest speaker will be Pernell Gerver, an award-winning Gardener of the Year, and non-members are welcome to attend.

Mr Gerver will present a program called “Gardens to Attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies” beginning at 1:30 pm. The program will follow a business meeting at 12:30 for members of the garden club.

Mr Gerver is a horticulturist, garden writer and television personality. His lecture and slide presentation will focus on how to create a garden that is a haven for hummingbirds and butterflies including which annuals, perennials and shrubs provide food and shelter.

The program will also highlight the various plants that provide nectar as well as host plants that can provide food for caterpillars, which will eventually turn into butterflies. There will be a question and answer session at the conclusion of the program and Mr Gerver plans to bring some plants with him to sell during the meeting.

Refreshments will be served. The guest/non-members fee is $5 per person. Marcia Dance, the garden club president, can provide additional information if needed at 267-6660. Program chairman Carol Tracey, at 267-6826, can also answer questions.

The business meeting and program Friday afternoon will be the conclusion to a busy day by the members of Southbury Garden Club. While the public is invited to join the group for Mr Gerver’s program at 1:30, many of the club members will be arriving at the town hall at 10 am that morning to work in a “Garden Therapy” workshop.

Members will decorate baskets with small plants, dried flowers and mosses, and then fill the baskets with small, wrapped toiletries or stamps and notecards. The completed baskets will then be donated to Visiting Nurses Association for their clients.

This is an ongoing project for the garden club. Over 60 baskets were donated to VNA last year.
