Openings Available For Kinetic-Cut Sculpture Race

NEW HAVEN — The International Festival of Arts & Ideas is seeking creative individuals from throughout Connecticut to enter The Great Kinetic-cut Sculpture Race 2001. Registration forms, now available from the festival, must be submitted by May 15.

The festival will award $100, to offset the cost of materials, to the first 30 school groups/classrooms that register. A limited number of commissions to artists will also be available.

At 1 pm on Sunday, June 17, people-powered kinetic sculptures designed by teams of artists, scientists, students and citizens across the state will race from Audubon Street to the New Haven Green as part of the 2001 International Festival of Arts & Ideas. This year’s festival will be celebrated with events throughout the arts and entertainment district of New Haven from June 14 to 30.

Monetary prizes, based 50 percent on aesthetic quality and 50 percent on speed, will be awarded by Citizens Bank to the top three sculptures, along with 11 additional thematic awards celebrating such qualities as enthusiasm, anti-ageism, humbleness and twittering (i.e. most moveable parts).

Sculpture Race registration forms and race guidelines, and information on commissions for artists, can be picked up at the festival office at 195 Church Street in New Haven. Information and forms can be requested by telephone, 203-498-1212; or transmitted by email, community.programs@snet.net.
