Ruth Ann Hensel, 86, of Newtown, Conn., died peacefully in her home on the morning of March 27. She was born in Sandy Hook, Conn., on February 21, 1936, to the late Birdsey and Hilda (Hanlon) Dean. Ruth was very proud to have been a lifelong resident of Newtown.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Powers; her son-in-law, Steven Powers; daughters-in-law, Siobhan O’Neill and Karen Hensel; grandsons, Kyle, Jordan, Aidan, Brady, Joey, Ryker, and Shane; granddaughters, Cameron and Riley; great-granddaughters, Khloe and Kennedy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Hensel, Sr; her four sons, Kenneth Jr, Steven, Richard, and Craig; her brothers, Arthur, Robert “Bucky,” Richard, Charles, and William; as well as her grandson Brandon.

She was employed as a CNA for 23 years at Ashlar of Newtown.

Ruth was very devoted to family and friends and loved nothing more than getting together for an informal meal, to play cards, have tea and chat, or, her favorite, to attend a backyard family potluck picnic with horseshoes and lots of gossip and laughter. Ruth also loved helping to raise her grandchildren, gardening, feeding her hummingbirds, watching the Yankees, tag sales, and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

The family will be laying Ruth to rest alongside predeceased family members in the near future. Family and friends will be invited to a Celebration of Life gathering that will follow.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made to the Brandon Hensel Athletic Memorial Scholarship, c/o Newtown High School.

Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, is serving the family.
