NAMI Speaker Will Discuss Benefits Of Meditation

On Wednesday, April 4, Judson Brewer, MD PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale, will discuss “From Addictions to Anxiety: Neurobiological Mechanisms of Mindfulness Meditation” at the NAMI Fairfield First Wednesday of the Month Speaker Meeting.

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Its goals are to support those living with mental illness and their loved ones, to provide educational programs to the community that foster understanding and healthy living, and to provide advocacy.

Recent evidence has suggested that mindfulness meditation may help treat a number of health-related problems, from anxiety to addictions. However, little is known about the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of this training.

New research at Yale University has begun to unravel these mysteries in both clinical studies of addictions such as smoking, and more basic research involving experienced meditation practitioners. Dr Brewer will discuss the latest findings from his laboratory at Yale, and how these might apply to our own daily lives.

The meeting will be held in the Eliot Room Library, First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield from 7:30 to 9 pm. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information call 203-650-3463.
