The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the traffic pattern and roadway line striping is scheduled to be shifted on April 1. The roadway will remain open with one lane in each direction. This shift is to complete work for the replacement of a 72-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP), conveying Deep Brook, which had collapsed and eroded the southern roadway embankment of SR 860 (Mile Hill Road).Replacement of the pipe is near completion and this shift will return traffic to the original alignment.

The CT DOT project will install a temporary pipe to divert the easterly channel of Deep Brook to the westerly channel, which will require clearing and grubbing, and trenching. A temporary water-handling-cofferdam will be necessary to maintain a dry work area where the collapsed occurred. A temporary earth-retaining system is needed to maintain the roadway embankment while excavating to replace 7-inch” CMP with an 84-inch RCP and install new headwalls.

The project was awarded to Empire Paving Company of Cromwell, at an estimated cost of $200,000, on April 27, 2019, and is scheduled to be completed June 2020.

The contractor will be permitted to install new pavement markings to shift traffic toward the north side shoulder and install Temporary Precast Concrete Barrier Curb on the south side shoulder to establish a work area. Two way traffic will be maintained, with 11-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction, during nonworking hours. Alternate one-way traffic operations, not to exceed 500 feet of length, will be allowed during working hours during operations, if needed for additional clearance.
