Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Horticulture Club of Newtown — A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is interested in studying horticulture, ecology, environmental studies, conservation, or forestry at a postsecondary institution or college. Applications are available at the Career Center and must be returned to the Career Center by April 13.

Newtown High School Choral Parents Scholarship — The Scholarship Committee of the Newtown High School Choral Parents group will award a college scholarship(s). Applications are available in the Career Center and Music Department. Interested seniors should complete the application and return it to Mr Harned by May 12.

Blue & Gold Booster Club Scholarship — The Blue & Gold Club of Newtown High School will award a minimum of two $500 scholarships this year, one for a female senior and one for a male senior. The applicant must have participated in a varsity sport during either their junior or senior year and their parent(s) must be a current, active member of the Blue & Gold Booster Club for at least one full year. The applicant must intend to further his/her education by attending an accredited college or two-year technical or vocational program. The deadline for receipt of applications is April 13.   

Society of Women Engineers National Scholarships — The organization offers renewable scholarships to female high school seniors who plan to study engineering or computer science at an accredited college. The range is $1,000 to $10,000. Specific application requirements and procedures are available at www.swe.org/scholarships. The Career Center has basic information. The deadline for freshman scholarships is May 15.

Hartford PFLAG, Hartford HGLHC and True Colors Scholarships — High school seniors from Connecticut who are members of, or allies to, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex communities are eligible to apply for up to $3,500 in scholarship assistance for higher education. The Career Center has applications. Applications must be postmarked by April 1.

Brill Scholarship — At least $2,000 will be awarded to any lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexal youth (ages 16–24) who is currently attending or is planning to attend college or technical school or accredited post high school program. Eligible applicants must be active in school or the community concerning LGBTIA issues. The completed application must be received by April 15.

Triangle Community Center Scholarship Fund — Two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning students. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents enrolled at an accredited vocational, undergraduate, or graduate degree-granting program in Connecticut. Award recipients will have been determined by the Scholarship Committee to be likely to make a substantial contribution to the community, while also demonstrating leadership and a commitment to excellence in their service, employment, or scholastic endeavors. Applications must be received by April 21.

Family Support Services Scholarship — The Connecticut Funeral Directors Association will award eight $500 scholarships (one in each Connecticut county) to high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in a profession that provides emotional or medical support to families. This includes professions as counseling, social services, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, medicine, social, gerontology, and funeral service. All applicants must have maintained at least a B GPA in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Applications are available in the Career Center or at www.cfda.org. The deadline is April 14.
