Jerry M. Kreinik

‘Blue Sky Thinker’ Was Inventor, Entrepreneur, And Futurist

Jerry M. Kreinik, 96, died at his home, in Parkersburg, W. Va., surrounded by his family, March 23. Mr Kreinik was born in 1915, in New York City, to Sarah and Isadore Kreinik.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Estelle; threes sons and daughters-in-law including Ted and Arlene Kreinik of Newtown; a sister; and four grandchildren.

Mr Kreinik, helped by his wife, developed industrial standards of excellence within the needlepoint and cross-stitch industry throughout the world.

A World War II veteran and New York University graduate, Mr Kreinik studied textiles, chemistry, law, and engineering. He worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yards developing textiles used for submariners and polar explorers, advanced the science of zippers and fasteners, and worked on the creative team developing the “D” ring used by millions today, as well as establishing sizing for women’s clothing. He taught the first class in plastics at Brooklyn College, and designed dustless charcoal. Mr Kreinik advanced the innovation of foam plastics, structural plastics, and laminates.

The Kreiniks moved to Parkersburg in 1966, and working with their knowledge, developed lines of soft, usable craft yarn products in silks and metallics. With their business, they traveled the world, and influenced the industry. They were recognized by the National Needlework Association for Excellence in Industry in 1994. Kreinik Mfg Co will celebrate 40 years in business in 2012.

Mr Kreinik was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, living a full and eventful life. His influence was felt by those he met.

He contributed his time and funds to groups including Temple B’nai Israel, Friends of the Parkersburg Public Library, and Parkersburg Art Center.

Services were conducted March 27, and internment was at Mt Olivet Cemetery, in Parkersburg.
