Newtown Toastmasters Announce Contest Winners

In March, Newtown Toastmasters hosted a standing-room-only audience for a Tall Tales and International Speech contests. The event consisted of six local candidates delivering original speeches within set timeframes.

Local winners included Edward Borsuk, who used humor to help stretch the truth in his tall tale, and Fred Ferris, who delivered a moving talk about the importance of recognizing life’s gifts. Both winners faced stiff completion and were judged on a number of factors, including vocal variety, physical movement, timing, and the organization of their talk.

Mr Borsuk and Mr Ferris will represent Newtown Toastmasters at the Area D5 contest held at Trumbull Library on Thursday, April 14. There they will compete against the winners of competitions held at five other area clubs. The winners of area contests will move on to a district competition, including chapters from New York, Massachusetts, and the remainder of Connecticut.

According to Cindy Held, president, Newtown Toastmasters, “These contests provide valuable experience for participants as they are challenged to raise the bar from their typical preparation and speaking styles. By engaging in a contest, participants are encouraged to improve their delivery and reach outside of their comfort zone.”

Newtown Toastmasters meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. To learn more, call 203-313-5507 or visit http://newtowntoastmasters.blogspot.com.
