NYMA Student Meriah Tani Recently Honored, Promoted

CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The DAR-Quassick (N.Y.) Chapter Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. It is open to students in their senior year of high school, and is awarded to someone deemed to have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Meriah Tani of Sandy Hook, who was recently promoted to the rank of captain at New York Military Academy, was one of five Good Citizenship Award honorees celebrated during a March 19 ceremony at DAR’s historic George Washington Headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y. Meriah is a senior at the college preparatory military co-educational boarding and day school in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

As part of the contest Meriah was required to submit a resume that highlighted her leadership experience, service activities, and athletic accomplishments. She was also required to write an essay, while in the presence of a faculty member, by hand, without using White-Out, within two hours of receiving the assignment. The theme was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” Ms Tani finished third in the greater Newburgh area.

Ms Tani is a member of the New York Military Academy Corps of Cadets and Army ROTC Honor Unit with distinction. She is also the cadet adjunct and female dormitory residential advisor (the cadet captain and leader of the female corps at the academy), a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Model UN, Beat Club, and NYMA’s varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball teams.
