An Ohio man was arrested by Newtown police this week on two charges related to inappropriate outreach to an underage person via computer.

Newtown Police Department School Resource Officers (SROs) William Chapman and Richard Monckton traveled to Sandusky, Ohio, where on Tuesday, they took into custody Gregory J. Voltz, 34, of that city.

Voltz was arrested on March 30. He was charged with risk of injury to a child, a Class C felony, and enticing a minor by computer, a Class B felony.

If convicted, Voltz could be facing up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for the Class C charge and a prison sentence of up to 40 years and additional fines up to $15,000 for the Class B charge.

The minor was in Newtown at the time of the incidents, which happened in August 2020, according to CT Judicial Branch court documents. Voltz was 33 at the time.

Voltz was held on a $300,000 court set bond. He was taken to Danbury Superior Court for arraignment on March 31. Following that appearance he was released from custody, with a pre-trial court date set for April 26.

The investigation was initiated after local police received a complaint from the parents of a Newtown child that Voltz had engaged in sexual activity with their child though a social media app.

The investigation was led by SRO Monckton, and took several months of multiple and various investigative steps to identify Voltz as the offender, according to Newtown Police Department Lt Aaron Bahamonde.

“SRO Monckton did an outstanding job in a very difficult investigation [that] required multiple search warrants and computer forensics to identify the true identity of the perpetrator of these computer crimes,” Bahamonde said Wednesday, March 31. “SRO Monkton was dogged in this investigation, and for that was able to bring Voltz to justice.

“We also cannot say enough about the cooperation our department received from the officers of the Sandusky Police Department, who tracked and apprehended Voltz on our warrant,” Bahamonde added.

According to The Sandusky Register, Voltz is a former city planner who was arrested in Sandusky on March 17, after police detectives there were notified of the arrest warrant held by Newtown police. Voltz was being held at in Eric County Jail on a no-bond order. He resigned from his city position on March 22.

During a court hearing that day, Voltz was ordered to be extradited to Connecticut.

Voltz was also a co-head cheerleading and tumble coach at American Prestige Gymnastics and Cheerleading in Sandusky, according to his LinkedIn profile.
