To the Editor:

Sometimes older people are reluctant to reach out and ask for a helping hand.

That’s why I am extremely thankful to Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS), a volunteer group that helps older residents in many ways, including making repairs so seniors can stay safely in their homes.

Beverly Bennett Schaedler, coordinator of the Chore Services Program for FONS arranged for a construction supervisor, Frank Healey, to install railings on two stairways so my impaired mother could utilize those stairs safely. All at no cost to her.

This is a program that makes me glad I moved to Newtown last year. What an outstanding resource to the community.

If you would like to support this program, or know a Newtown senior who is struggling with a chore or home repair, contact fonschoreservices@gmail.com or call 203-430-0633. I can’t think of a better way to pay it forward.

Sincerely,

Katherine Gay Smith
