‘Rites Of Spring’ To Be Presented As

Play With Your Food Season Finale

“Rites of Spring,” the final program of the 2010 Play With Your Food lunchtime theater series presented by The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, will take place on Thursday, April 8, at Edmond Town Hall.

The afternoon begins with a catered buffet lunch by Double Eagle Deli & Grill from noon until 12:30 pm. A staged reading of three short spring-themed plays and a brief discussion with the actors will follow, with the program ending at 1:30 pm.

The program is presented within The Alexandria Room, on the third floor of the former town hall building at 45 Main Street in Newtwon.

“Our collaboration with the popular Play With Your Food theatre series has been an exciting addition to our programming this season,” said NCAC President Jennifer Butler. “The plays comprising Rites of Spring are filled with humor and romance and executed by wonderful, professional actors.”

Lanford Wilson’s A Betrothal is a romantic comedy set in the most unlikely of settings with an unusual twist. Wilson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Talley’s Folly, is known for the use of rich language and taking risks in his plays.

Judgement Call by Fred Stroppel irreverently observes three baseball umpires preparing for their spring season. The author of After the Ball (presented in February), Stroppel has a biting sense of humor that infuses all his writing.

After seeing the hilarious A Deer Play by Tony Award winner Mary Louise Wilson (Grey Gardens), folks will never view deer the same way again.

For the past eight years from January through April, Play With Your Food has brought friends together to watch quality theatrical writing come alive in Fairfield County communities. While Play With Your Food attracts professional actors from throughout the New York metropolitan area, the cast for Rites of Spring features all Fairfield County residents: Michael Habetz (Fairfield), Richard Leonard (Cos Cob), Don Striano (Newtown) and Nadine Willig (Stratford). The program is directed by Newtown’s Kate Katcher.

Doors open at 11:50. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at NewtownArtsCommission.org or by phone at 203-364-9844.  MasterCard and Visa are accepted; reservations are required.
