Newtown Youth Gymnasts Cap Regular Season

The Newtown-based Vasi’s International Gymnastics program, consisting of  47 gymnasts (24 of whom are from Newtown and Sandy Hook) recently completed the regular winter season. Some of the team members will continue to compete in state competition, this month.

Vasi’s has two teams: the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic team, which competes at levels 4 through 10, and the USAG PREP-Optional which competes at Novice, Intermediate and Advanced levels. The gymnasts competed from January through April in 4 to 8 regular season competitions both in Connecticut (Danbury, Trumbull, and Southbury) as well as throughout New York and this year as far as Pennsylvania. Upon qualification, gymnasts then compete in the Connecticut State Meet to finish out the season. At the State Meet only levels 8, 9 and 10 can then qualify to Regional competition.

Vasile Cioana (Member of the Romanian Olympic Team from 1990-1999) started a competitive team with approximately 17 gymnasts in 2007. By the end of the 2008 season the team had grown to 28 competitive and 8 pre-team gymnasts. Gymnasts, who range in age from 7 to 18 years old, dedicate 8 to 17 hours of workouts per week.

During each meet, the girls compete individually and, depending on the number of girls at a particular level, for their team as well. The four events on which they compete are beam, vault, uneven bars and floor exercises.
