Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*POT LUCK dinner will be Tuesday, April 8, from 4 to 6 pm. Bring a dessert or an appetizer to share. Cost is $5. Call to RSVP.

*RECOGNITION TEA on Wednesday, April 9, at 1 pm to thank our senior volunteers.

*Applying for SENIOR TAX RELIEF BENEFIT? Attend this meeting on April 9, from 9 am to noon; with your 2007 tax return, Social Security 1099, and all other 1099s for pension, etc.

*ITALIAN FEST at Mount Haven Resort, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, April 10. Depart at 9 am; cost is $70 per person.

*AARP TAX ASSISTANCE, appointments only on Mondays through April from 9 am to noon. Bring last year’s tax return and all other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 for an appointment.

Upcoming Programs

*Monthly COA INFORMATIONAL TEA will be Monday, April 14, 2 pm, with updates on Seniors Action Committee and FHH. Refreshments will be served.

*BILL MICHAELS is back on Wednesday, April 15, at 1:30 pm.

*BINGO is on Wednesday, April 23 and 30

*The COMMISSION ON AGING will meet at the Senior Center every third Monday of the month, at 5 pm.

 

Day Trips

*Floor show, big band and dancing at The Return of Vaudeville & The Big Band Era at Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., overlooking the Hudson River. Depart on Thursday, April 24, at 10:15 am; $77 per person.

*Visit FIESTA DINNER THEATRE to see “Grandma’s Getting Married,” on Wednesday, May 21, along with a luncheon. Depart at 10 am; $78 per person.

*American Ballet Theatre presents SWAN LAKE. Depart 9:30 am on Saturday, May 31, to New York City and enjoy lunch and the ballet Swan Lake. Cost is $150.

*See JERSEY BOYS on Broadway, featuring Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons music, on June 11 and have lunch at Brazil Brazil. Call the Senior Center for reservations; $182 per person; depart at 9 am.

Recurring Activities

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

April 7-11

Monday: Spaghetti and meatballs in marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, fresh zucchini, garlic bread, sherbet.

Tuesday: Stuffed salmon with dill sauce or chicken salad on wheat with lettuce, rice pilaf, Oriental blend vegetables, wheat bread, cling peaches.

Wednesday: Sliced turkey with gravy, herbed stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, dinner roll, pineapple tidbits.

Thursday: Stuffed cabbage roll, mashed potato, diced carrots, wheat bread, cranberry juice, coffee cake.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, April 14: Orange glazed chicken quarter, egg noodles, garden peas, pumpernickel bread, chocolate pudding with whipped topping.

Tuesday, April 15: Sliced ham with pineapple glaze, cut sweet potato, mixed vegetables, wheat bread, mandarin oranges.
