Marjorie A. Lewis

Marjorie A. Lewis, 84, of Newtown died March 30 at the Danbury Hospital. She was born in Bridgeport in 1932 to Helen (Bakos) and George Gulla.

She grew up in Danbury and graduated from Danbury High School in 1950. She also graduated from Mount Sinai School of Nursing in 1953 and from Hunter College.

Mrs Lewis was the assistant director of pediatrics for Mount Sinai Hospital and the recipient of the Ellen Fuller Award from Mount Sinai in 1989. She was the editor for the

Alumni News and was president of the alumni. She co-authored with Sylvia Barker the book The Sinai Nurse: A History of Nursing at the Mount Sinai Hospital, 1852-2000. She retired to Newtown in 1994.

She was the oldest of 11 children and is survived by eight brothers and sisters and their spouses: Jean Holmes, Emily Gulla, Robert and Betsy (Dow) Gulla, Mary (Gulla) Cormier, Emil Gulla, Barbara (Gulla) and Gerald Vidal, Elizabeth (Gulla) and Tom Clark, and Susan (Gulla) and Charles Zilinek. Several nieces, nephews, grandnephews, and grandnieces survive her. Her husband, Harold Lewis, and her two brothers, Edward and David Gulla, predeceased her.

There will be a short ceremony for friends and family at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Saturday, April 8, at 11 am. Interment will follow at the Newtown Village Cemetery, Elm Drive, Newtown.

Donations in Mrs Lewis's name may be given to Planned Parenthood at plannedparenthood.org or to the Salvation Army at salvationarmyusa.org.
