Ingrid Meier, 94, passed away peacefully at home on March 30, with her family by her side. Born in Neuendorf, Pomerania, Germany, on October 2, 1924, to Dr Max and Marie (Toetzke) Dullin, she came to the United States of America in 1952, with her husband, Adolf, an aerospace engineer, after losing everything in World War II.

She and Adolf lived the first 14 years in New York City and on Long Island before moving to Newtown in 1966. Here, she and Adolf raised their three children. She was very happy to have moved to beautiful Newtown. She wrote to her German relatives and friends that she was finally home again in Neuendorf, which literally means Newtown in German.

The next 53 years were filled with a lot of volunteer work to give back to the community she loved: Newtown Woman’s Club, Meals on Wheels, Spay Neuter Association of Newtown (SNAN), Newtown Congregational Church, the Circle of Hope, and many other causes. Without question, you could always count on Ingrid to lend a helping hand.

Having a good German education, she was a font of information on history, geography, current events, and politics. She had a superior memory, which was jaw dropping as she remembered things about people that they themselves had forgotten. A daughter of a veterinarian, she was a lover of animals and their welfare. She adored nature and celebrated all seasons with enthusiasm. A traditional European Christmas was her favorite holiday that she looked forward to every year.

Ingrid is survived by her daughters, Chris Dran and husband Joe of Newtown, and Karin Backofen and husband Jeffrey of Glastonbury; and son Peter Meier and partner Rolande Buxton Paguay of Brookfield. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kyle Backofen and wife Samantha, Anne Backofen, Evan Meier, and Eric Meier; many friends, extend family, the Grauers, and her beloved dog and faithful companion, Abigail.

Her husband predeceased her in 1991.

Ingrid’s family sincerely thanks the many health professionals from Bethel Visiting Nurses Association, Home Care Advantage LLC, and Regional Hospice for their loving care given to her. We could not have done it without you.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following organizations: Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown CT 06470; or the Spay And Neuter Association of Newtown (SNAN), PO Box 352, Newtown CT 06470.

Services will be held at the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, Newtown on Friday, April 5, at 11 am, and then to the Newtown Village Cemetery for final resting place. All present are invited for lunch to the Villa Restaurant, Sandy Hook, to celebrate Ingrid’s life.
