NHS Students And Faculty To Shoot Hoops To Support Wounded Warriors Project

For the second year in a row, the Newtown High School Peer Leadership group has organized a Student vs Faculty game that will raise money for veterans. The Hoops For Troops event is scheduled for Friday, May 11, and will be held in the high school’s main gymnasium at 6 pm.

“I think it’s such a great way to not only get everyone together and participating in a fun activity, but it also goes to a cause that not too many people would commonly think to donate to or support,” said Newtown High School junior and Peer Leadership member Kate Bartel this week.

Kate said the club decided to host the event again to support veterans and troops in Newtown. She also said being able to help raise awareness and support for veterans and troops in exciting.

“We had a great turnout last year,” said Peer Leadership advisor Bret Nichols, “and we hope to build on that this year.”

Mr Nichols also said the event is great for building community involvement behind a worthy cause.

The Hoops For Troops event will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project, which assists and provides support to returning service personnel from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Last year more than 50 students representing different clubs and sports teams at NHS played against 15 teachers. The teachers won the game last year, and the event raised $400 for the cause.
