Poetry At Promisek
Poetry At Promisek
BRIDGEWATER â The public is invited to a poetry reading by Cortney Davis at Promisek in Bridgewater on Sunday, April 17, at 2 pm.
Ms Davis will be reading from cover to cover her just published book, Leopoldâs Maneuvers, which is already the winner of the Prairie Schooner Poetry Award.
This will be the second cover to cover poetry reading at Promisek. After the first one, with Sondra Zeidenstein reading Resistance, Ms Davis wrote: âThe effect of the reading was exhilarating. We listeners heard the book, the arc of the drama behind the poems, and we understood why the poems had been knit together in that particular order. We were treated to the poetâs voice, the full roundness of her spirit evident in the accumulated power of the poetry, quiet poems as well as crowd pleasers.
âMore than that,â she continued, âwe were able to watch the poet as she deepened into the poems and into the reading.â
Following Ms Davisâs reading, participants will be invited to talk about how a book of poetry gets put together, how experiencing the book as a whole differs from hearing individual poems, and how its form tells a particular story. Anyone putting books together will find this interesting, as will those who care about the art of poetry and those who just like to hear a good story.
Promisek is on Skyline Ridge Road in Bridgewater. From Route 133 take a left onto Weweka Brook Road, a right onto Beach Hill Road, and a right onto Skyline Ridge Road; watch for the Promisek sign 2.2 miles from the turn onto Skyline. The reading will take place in the school building.
Suggested donation is $10. Call Promisek for additional information at 860-354-1788.
