Couple Seeks Traffic Enforcement On Great Quarter Road

By Andrew Gorosko

Following a couple’s request for traffic enforcement in their neighborhood, Police Commission members said they will have police monitor traffic conditions on Great Quarter Road to deal with hazards there posed by speeding motorists.

Kendra Bobowick and Jerry Cullen of 13 Great Quarter Road attended the Police Commission’s April 7 session to express their concerns about the hazards to pedestrians created by speeding drivers on that mile-long dead-end street off Berkshire Road, near the Monroe town line.

Speeding drivers on the road cause her to fear for her physical safety, Ms Bobowick said in urging the commission to take steps to have drivers slow down there. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

The drivers who speed on the street largely live in the neighborhood, Ms Bobowick said. They should have more regard for their neighborhood, she added. Ms Bobowick said she expects that her gesturing to speeding motorists to reduce their speed annoys those drivers.

Ms Bobowick jogs and also walks dogs along the street.

“I just feel like I’m yelling into the wind…What do I do?” she asked.

In letter to the commission, she wrote, in part, “I want some help. I want some traffic enforcement. I want to feel I can safely set foot on Great Quarter Road without encountering a car driving too fast to avoid me, a child, or a dog, or driving with pedestrian’s safety as an afterthought. People are driving without regard to others on the road and it’s just unsafe.”

Drivers need to be made aware of the problems that they are creating by speeding on the road, Ms Bobowick said.

Police Captain Joe Rios explained that police receive speeding complaints from residents townwide.

Capt Rios said the police department’s traffic unit will research the speeding problems on Great Quarter Road. Police will look into the presence of traffic signs in the area, he said, adding that police action may include positioning electronic speed displays there to show motorists how fast they are traveling.

Ms Bobowick said April 8 that the police’s traffic unit had contacted her about measures it would take to address her concerns.
