Battle Of The Seasons:

Winter Invades Spring

By Steve Bigham

What season is it anyway? That’s what a lot of people were asking themselves earlier this week as the area was hit with nearly 4 to 5 inches of snow.

Most of that snow fell on Sunday and it was gone by Monday afternoon, in time to allow the local spring sports teams to play their games. However, snow was spotted in the air once again on Tuesday, causing some to wonder what the rest of April had in store. Will the old saying “April showers…” need to be changed to “April blizzards…?”

According to Dan Pagliaro of the Western Connecticut State University weather center, the latest snowfall on record for this area occurred on May 9, 1977. On that day, the Danbury area received about three inches.

“We had a late season outbreak of cold air and whatever moisture in place when the cold front went through came in the form of snow,” Mr Pagliaro said.

The cold weather was expected to depart by the end of the week, with temperatures finally back to normal by the weekend.
