A Rose in a Tulip Garden
A black girl in a white school is like a rose in a tulip garden
Yet she is still as beautiful as the other flowers,
Then one day weeds moved in the garden
Her flower became the most beautiful of all
Because she loves like a rose, she doesnât hate like a weed
She is trying to grow but weeds are in her path.

Angel
She walks proudly, a smile on her tiny face.
She is an angel in our midst.
The slurs and chants ring around her,
Which she never seems to hear.
Above her head, hatred burns into the brick.
Years of prejudice hit the wall,
Barely missing her innocence.

Strength
Strength amidst the chaos
Pure and innocent she stands
Whilst the world rages behind her;
A world forever changed
Shiny black shoes, glistening badges and thick southern postures
Needed to escort a child to school?
Taunts and verbal javelins float through the air
Always falling short of their target
A child protected for a moment eternalized
Of strength amidst chaos.

Comparison
The crimson fruit splattered against the wall,
The civil rights movement in action.
The guards standing straight as bars blocking out the outside world.
The men always behind her like her shadow.
The mobs are wild animals roaring at her.
The graffiti on the wall like the prejudice that tarnishes America.

Me
Writing on the walls.
Tomatoes thrown to threaten me.
A smell of horror in the air to scare me.
I feel alone.
The color of hate is on the walls.
But I am brave.
