Volunteers Sought For Independent Living Week
Volunteers Sought For
Independent Living Week
Volunteers are being sought for a joint venture planned for Independent Living Week, which runs from May 1 through 7.
CT AARP and CYSA (Connecticut Youth Services Association) are planning projects to make changes in older peopleâs homes so that they may continue to live independently.
Connecticut just happens to be the first and only state in the country to be using an intergenerational approach.
Teams of adults and young people will be working throughout Newtown on Saturday, May 6, performing various chores that seniors may find are becoming difficult for them.
Members of the Middle School Youth Advisory Board, sponsored by Newtown Youth Services (NYS), are gearing up for this cooperative event. Additionally, youth from the high school group, other youth groups, scouts, and entire families are preparing to lend a hand on the workday, May 6. The day will run from 8 am to 4 pm with breakfast and lunch provided for the workers. Volunteers are needed for all or part of the time.
Residents who would like to volunteer are asked to call the NYS office to let them know what they would like to do. There is a list of tasks from which townspeople can choose. Those with a special talent or specific ability should mention it. Financial donations are also needed to provide food for the volunteers, purchase flowers to be planted at the seniorsâ homes, and for supplies, such as house numbers, light bulbs, paint, and cleaning supplies. Checks may be made out to Newtown Youth Services.
Surveys were distributed to seniors via various methods. Seniors who did not receive one and would like to participate in this service are asked to call the NYS office at 270-4335.
Newtown is the only town in this area that is participating in this intergenerational project. Newtown Youth Services hopes many people will come forward to help make someoneâs life a little easier.
Lake George Road does not run along the bank of a body of water. It was named for two local property owners, Thomas Lake and George Smith.
