Earth Day Project At Ordway Preserve

WESTON — The Nature Conservancy’s Earth Day Project this year will take place at the 62-acre Katharine Ordway Preserve, at 165 Goodhill Road, on Saturday, April 29, from 9 am to noon. Individuals, families, and school, community, and business groups are invited to participate in improvements to the trails and natural landscape of the preserve.

This event is a good way for people to celebrate Earth Day, to give a little attention to the land that provides people of all ages with so much enjoyment, and to get the trails and arboretum at the nature preserve in tiptop shape for the many visitors who will be walking along them later this spring.

The lands are the former estate of Katharine Ordway, a Weston resident and major benefactor of the Nature Conservancy. It was she who gave Devil’s Den to the Conservancy and who made possible, through her generous contributions, conservancy protection of land from Maine to Hawaii.

Trail days are an easy way for people who like to be outside in nature and who enjoy a little physical work to participate in a one-time volunteer effort on special maintenance projects. The three-hour sessions are also a great way for participants to meet like-minded people who care about the environment and who want to make immediate improvements to the physical network of trails open to the public all year long during daylight hours.

Volunteers do not need to be experienced at trail maintenance. All work is supervised, and all tools are provided. Participants need only wear work shoes and gloves and work clothes. Meet at the map shelter in the Katharine Ordway Preserve parking lot, at 165 Goodhill Road. Call the Den office at 203/226-4991 weekdays to register or to receive further directions.
