Newtown High Tennis Teams Battle Tough Opponents

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams had challenging but somewhat successful opening weeks, coming out with .500 records to start the season.

The girls fell 4-3 to Joel Barlow of Redding in the season opener on April 7 before rebounding with a 4-3 win at Pomperaug of Southbury the next day. In their first two home matches of the year, the girls fell 6-1 to Fairfield Ludlowe on April 9 before bouncing back for a 4-3 win over Lauralton Hall on April 11. The boys, meanwhile, played just two matches in week one, following up a 5-2 defeat to Weston on April 6 with a 5-2 win over Pomperaug on April 8.

In their wins over Pomperaug and Lauralton, the girls were led by No. 1 singles player Lauren Frazzetta and the top doubles team of Meghan Loose and Julia Frattaroli, who earned two-set wins in both clashes. Other Newtown winners against Pomperaug were No. 4 singles player Grace Winans and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Sara Benson and Stephanie Roman. Against Hall, Newtown got wins at fourth singles by Mia Terracino and at third doubles by Annie Beier and Meghan Logan. Loose and Frattaroli picked up the team’s lone win against Ludlowe, pulling out a 7-6, 7-6 nail-biter in the top doubles spot.

In their loss to Weston, in a match that does not count in the conference standings (the teams will meet again in a South-West Conference clash on May 9), the Newtown boys got wins by Rob Beier in the top singles position and Tyler Ruefenacht at No. 4 singles. Beier won in two sets and Ruefenacht, after losing 6-2 to Josh Weiss, came away with 6-2, 6-3 wins to claim the match.

Against Pomperaug, in a match that does count toward in the SWC standings, Newtown got wins in all four singles positions and in the top doubles match. No. 1 player Beier pulled off a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Andrew Oravecs; No. 2 Cam McCleary was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 winner over Shryan Appalavaju; No. 3 Ruefenacht had a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brian Westerman; and No. 4 Ricky Fuentes, after surrendering loss in first match, won the next two for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Tony Ribas. In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Connor Howell and Sean Elliott defeated Eric Helfer and Scott Siegler 6-1, 7-6 (12-10 in the tiebreaker).
