Steele Makes

Special Appearance

For Newtown Rotary

Sage Steele, co-host of ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter, addressed Newtown Rotary Club at a recent meeting.

The daughter of Rotarian Gary Steele and his wife, Mona, Ms Steele spoke about her experiences moving up through the highly competitive profession of sports reporting and the importance of setting goals and staying true to them. A self-described “Army brat” and sports fanatic, Ms Steele set a goal when she was in the eighth grade to someday be a reporter on SportsCenter.

After earning a BS degree in sports reporting from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1995, she immediately began to work on achieving her goal. Reporting assignments took her to South Bend, Indianapolis, Tampa, and Baltimore. In each of these cities she devoted herself to her work, covering all types of sporting events and teams at both the college and professional level.

In 2007, Ms Steele finally realized her dream when she joined ESPN.

When she is not reporting sports, Ms Steele volunteers for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center, The Alzheimer’s Association, and spends time with her husband and three children.

Newtown Rotary Club comprises men and women who are in business and professions in the local community. Their efforts and belief in the concept of “Service Above Self” provide support for many organizations and individuals to have a better life.

The club meets every Monday at 6 pm at The Inn at Newtown.
