WOODBURY – The mother/daughter duo of Sara and Alex Sherter, former residents of Sandy Hook for seven years, wrapped up a gold medal competition ski season with a couple of national championships.

Alex, 9, captured the 2000 CT Ski Council State Junior GS Championships at Okemo, Vermont, on March 3 while her mother, Sara, captured the 2000 US Alpine Masters National Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine, in competition from March 17 through March 24.

It was a solid season for both skiers.

Alex took gold at the annual Woodbury Christmas Camp at the Woodbury Ski Area (where she trains under Rod Taylor). She went on to ace the CT State Junior Grand Slalom at Okemo – turning in the fastest girl’s time and the second fastest time of the day.

Sara won both the CT State GS at Mohawk and the CT State Downhill at Okemo to start her seasons, both wins giving her second place overall for the CT Womens Combined Award. With her main focus on the USSA Alpine Masters Series, she out-raced 260 other skiers for the final championship. Her standings in all the events had her squeak out her victory by just one point.

Her success will have her as one of the 10 women nationwide named to the prestigious Spyder US Alpine Masters Ski Team for the year 2000.

Alex and Sara will continue training in the off-season, including racing in July on the glacier at Mount Hood in Oregon. Then it’s another crack at the CT State Championship for Alex and, for Sara, on to Sun Valley, Idaho, for the 2001 Nationals.
