NEW MILFORD â Nothing like a little tension to start the season.
Newtown escaped the Candlewood Valley Country Club on Monday with a victory over New Milford despite the Nighthawks and Green Wave finishing the match tied at 170-170. Ties in the South-West Conference get decided by the fifth man and, in this case, it was the 45 carded by Mark Werbeck which helped lift the âHawks to the win.
On the tiebreaker, Werbeck edged Matt Warren by five strokes.
Mike Rostafin led the âHawks with a medalist performance of 40, five over par. Joe Ziemann fired a 42 while Taylor Gunn and Nate Gaines both came in with solid 44s. The Green Wave was led by Josh Richter, who carded a 40, and Austin Lord who chipped in with a 42.
The âHawks, 1-0, hosted Notre Dame at Heritage Village Country Club in Southbury on Wednesday and will return to Heritage on Monday for a match against Jonathan Law. The âHawks will then travel to Grassy Hills in Milford for a battle with Foran.
