Even though many eyes were focussed on Kenyan Elijah Lagat, the first-place finisher, at the Boston Marathon last weekend there were a number of local residents who participated in the historic race (now in its 104th year).
The top local finisher was former Newtown High School athlete Kyle Trocolla, who completed the marathon in 2:44.55 (just 35 minutes behind Lagat). Other local finishers include Ed Sandifer (3:14.33), Laura Helig (3:37.23), and Rebecca Steinkraus (3:37.24).
Trocolla was 256th overall and 202nd in his age group out of some 18,000 runners. This was his second marathon in six months, having qualified for the Boston race with his 24th-place finish at the Philadelphia Marathon in November of 1999.
Trocolla is a senior at LaSalle University and a member of the LaSalle track and field team. He entered the Boston Marathon not only as an individual but also as part of a four-man team (team results not available at press time).
