Summer Sounds Of Music Camps
To Fill WCSU
DANBURY â Another summer of stirring sounds and learning is on the Western Connecticut State University calendar featuring the Manhattan String Quartet, Flute and Band Camps and Julius Baker Flute Master Class Camps. The music-making and learning commence on June 25, and will last through the middle of August at the midtown campusâ White Hall, at 181 White Street.
Westernâs music department is sponsoring the Manhattan String Quartet Chamber Music Camp from June 25-30; the Summer Band Camp from July 23-30; a flute camp from July 31 through August 4; and two sessions of The Julius Baker 2000 Flute Master Class, August 5-10 and August 10-15.
The residency fee for string, band and flute camps is $565, or $415 for commuters. Cost for the Julius Baker master classes for resident performers is $565, and $415 for commuters, and the cost for auditors is $365 for residents, $215 for commuters.
The Manhattan String Quartet is geared to students ages 10 to 18, who will study under the guidance of violinists Eric Lewis and Calvin Wiersma, violist John Dexter and cellist Chris Finckel. The Band Camp is for students from grades 5-12. Westernâs Dan Goble (jazz studies), Kevin Isaacs (music theory) and Luis Fernando Jimenez (director of bands) will be among the instructors, as well as Western alumni Gregg Winters (jazz), Margaret Winters (vocal) and James Buchta (band).
Kerry Walker, Julius Baker, Katherine Hoover, John Solum and Richard Wyton will conduct the Flute Camp for high school students.
In addition to Mr Baker, the Flute Master Class Camp will be taught by Jeanne Baxtresser, Sandra Church, Tadeu Coelho, Bart Feller, Bradley Garner, Trudy Kane, Jeffrey Khaner, Marya Martin, Michael Parloff, Marina Piccinini, Gary Schocker, Joshua Smith and Keith Underwood.
