Newtown High School’s Board of Education student representatives offered a “spirited” update at the board’s virtual April 6 meeting.

Student representatives Rushil Jerfy and Jillian Clure share news from a high school student’s perspective at each board meeting.

The high school recently celebrated Spirit Week, with students dressing up for the different themes each day of the week, Rushil shared.

Rushil also reported that Newtown International Center for Education (NICE) Club members participated in a Zoom call with the Japan Society to speak with students in Japan.

“We talked to actual kids our age over there,” said Rushil. “And so, we got to see all the similarities and differences between our two cultures as well as [their] future aspirations... Newtown High School was the only school in the country that did this meeting, and overall it was a great experience.”

Jillian noted that college admissions are being announced and she is “crossing her fingers” for positive results for her “fellow Nighthawks.”

With winter sports completed, Jillian offered an overview that “a lot of them placed well,” and shared spring sports are up next.

Jillian also shared a look at the current “spectator policy” for sports. For outside sports, she said, all athletes are allowed two spectators, whether the game is home or away, and for indoor sports athletes are allowed “two parents, but just for the home events.”

“Spectators must wear a mask and maintain social distance,” Jillian continued, adding that goes for whether the sport is outside or inside.

She also reminded the board members that NHS Drama is readying two spring musicals this year. Both productions will be streamed online. Freshmen and sophomores are readying Godspell to stream on Friday, May 7, at 7 pm, and juniors and seniors are preparing The Mystery of Edwin Drood to stream on Friday, May 28, at 7 pm. Tickets are currently available to purchase for Godspell at showtix4u.com/event-details/47760. A ticket entitles the purchaser to a streaming pass to watch the performance online. Tickets are $25.

Students taking Advanced Placement classes at NHS are preparing for final exams now, Jillian shared later.

“I noticed at school that the teachers are starting to remind us that it is very important that we stay following all the [pandemic] guidelines so that all of our hopes for the end of the year activities... we can actually do that,” Jillian said. She added, “It is just very important now that we follow the guidelines.”
