Joan C. Oberg, 78, of Bethel, died on April 6, at the Danbury Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 20 at St Mary Church, Bethel. She was buried beside her husband, Eric V. Osberg, at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Danbury.
She is survived by a brother, Edward C. Shanley of Newtown; and three sisters: Dorothy McGurkin of Wethersfield, Ruth Hennessey of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Clarice Osiecki of Danbury, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a friend of Bill W.
She was predeceased by her older sisters, Catherine Cole and Margaret Wixted.
Mrs Oberg was born September 15, 1926, in Bethel, the daughter of the late Edward and Clarice (Clapp) Shanley. She was a graduate of the Bethel High School, where she was a member of the basketball team. She also played trumpet with the Grassy Plain Drum Corps, ultimately becoming a very skilled trumpet player, playing in local groups.
After she married and moved to Bayside, Queens, she was employed with Western Union in New York City, where she trained as a master telegrapher. Following her retirement with Western Union, she began her employment with Montgomery Ward at its corporate headquarters.
After her retirement and the death of her husband, she returned to Bethel.
The Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, was in charge of arrangements.
