Auditions Are Scheduled For An Original Production By Town Players
Town Players will conduct auditions for its summer production, The Revenge Tragedy: A New Comedy in the Old Style, on Monday and Tuesday, May 8 and 9. The production â and the auditions â will be directed by its author, Ruth Anne Baumgartner.
The play is a satire on downsizing, language and higher education. It is also a take-off on the revenge tragedies popular in Shakespeareâs day. The production will be Shakespearean in style.
Of the major roles, nine are men and seven are women, of various ages. The cast also includes a number of smaller roles, all speaking, some of which may be cast gender-blind. There are no roles for children. All roles are open.
Actors should come ready to read scenes from the script (no accents, please). Those who feel cold readings do not represent them accurately may also offer a prepared Shakespearean comic monologue. Copies of the script are available for perusal before auditions at Pequot Library in Southport and C.H. Booth Library in Newtown.
People who can sing madrigals or play lute, flute, trumpet or recorder are welcome, and should attend the audition to speak with the director. Anyone interested in crew or tech work also should attend the audition and speak with the producer. Participation in the community-theatre production is without pay.
Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday evenings, from 7 to 9:30 pm, at Town Playersâ Little Theatre, on Orchard Hill Road in Newtown. Orchard Hill Road is off Route 25, about one-half mile north of Sand Hill Plaza.
Production dates are weekends, June 30 to July 22, including one matinee on July 16. For more information, Ms Baumgartner can be reached at 203/384-8515.
