The streak continues – well, almost.

The Nighthawks did raise their unbeaten record to 4-0 in the South-West Conference on Monday afternoon in Bethel, but their amazing string of consecutive individual match victories was stopped at 25.

The ‘Hawks had won their first three contests of the season 7-0, but against the Wildcats of Bethel had to settle for a 5-2 win.

If you can call that settling.

Zach Miller, Jon Perachio, Sean O’Mahoney and Peter Stephenson all won two-set victories in singles to put the match away early. Miller defeated Greg Kilcourse 6-1, 6-1; Perachio beat Jason McDougall 6-1, 6-0; O’Mahoney defeated Brian Budner 6-1, 6-2; and Stephenson slipped past  Polak So 6-3, 6-4.

The individual match streak came to an end at No. 1 doubles, when Newtown’s Adam Ponsky and Ami Kilchevsky were trimmed by Tim Krayesky and Kevin Dausch 7-6, 6-2. Matt Beres and Dan Golenbock of Newtown then went to three sets to defeat Derek Brandt and Tim Kilcourse 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 before Ben Nash and Pat Denicola of Newtown were beaten by Steve DeBenedetto and Chris Rodriquez 6-1, 6-2.

The ‘Hawks were set to host Jonathan Law on Wednesday with a Friday match away at Masuk. The ‘Hawks will return home on Monday, May 1, for a battle with Immaculate and then travel to New Milford on Wednesday.

Girls Win Third

The ‘Hawks had gotten off to a pretty solid start with a pair of victories, but following a 7-0 loss to Lauralton Hall last week they needed a little bit of a pick-me-up . . . and got it on Monday with a 5-2 win over Bethel.

Newtown raises its record to 3-1.

Kaitlin Lavery, Alexis Nahoum, and Caroline Kunkel all won singles matches to start the afternoon. Lavery bested Nadia Espinosa 6-2, 6-2 while Nahoum defeated Kaitlin Imwalle 6-1, 6-1. Kunkel, meanwhile, slipped past Emily Sheskin 6-4, 6-1. Kristie Dougherty suffered Newtown’s only loss in singles, but did not go quietly, losing 6-3, 7-5 to Lidania Gonzalez.

The ‘Hawks put the match away in doubles as the No. 1 team of Caitlin Martin and Monica Alpert blanked Amy Amin and Meghan Hollopeter 6-0, 6-0. After Danielle Imwalle and Jessica Dorsey defeated Newtown’s Maria Pavelo and Jackie Alpert 6-2, 7-5, Newtown Amanda Cruz and Rachel Stern finished off the Wildcats with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sara Bomberger and Karol Markosky.

The girls were set to travel to Jonathan Law on Wednesday and then return home on Griday to host Masuk. On Monday, May 1, the ‘Hawks will travel to Danbury to take on Immaculate and then return home on Wednesday for a match against New Milford.
