Giant Dancing Shells & Other Scary Things At Discovery

BRIDGEPORT — Giant sea shells and a humorous look at scary things are the subjects of two new exhibitions at The Discovery Museum. Both shows will be on view through June 25.

“Dance of the Shells 2000” by installation artist Chandler Davis of Devon, Conn., features larger-than-life sea shells made of fiberglass, polyester and paint, on view throughout the lobby of the museum. Mr Davis’ work includes conch, cone, scallop, mussel and nautilus shells.

His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Connecticut, in New York City and in private collections throughout the United States. His mural commissions include “The Gold Miners” at Norwalk Savings Society and “History of Norwalk” at Estate Liquidators.

“Nothing to Fear” by illustrator Adam Kaplan of Fairfield takes a fun look at scary things. Mr Kaplan’s illustrations in watercolor and multi-media have titles such as “Hunkahunkaphobia: Fear of Elvis Impersonators,” “Monkaphobia: Fear of Balding,” and “Hoppitaphobia: Fear of Rabbits.”

His work has been exhibited as part of the South Norwalk Arts Festival, at the Palace Theater in Stamford and in Providence, R.I.

The Discovery Museum is at 4450 Park Avenue, one mile south of the Merritt Parkway; signs are posted. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5.50 for senior citizens, students with ID and children ages 3 to 18; and free for children under age 3. Call The Discovery Museum at 203/372-3521 for additional information.
