Although there was some confusion about who would play first (the jayvee or varsity) and what time the varsity game would get started, there was little confusion about who came to Bruce Jenner Stadium ready to play.

It was Newtown.

The Nighthawks used four goals each from Caitlin Collier (giving her 14 for the year and 88 for her career) and Sarah O’Sullivan (giving her 17 for the year and 61 for her career) to blast Guilford, 14-3, on Tuesday.

The win raised Newtown’s record to 4-1 on the season. The ‘Hawks – who have outscored their opponents 57-26 in the five games – have scored better than 11 goals in each of their last three games and no fewer than nine goals in a game all season.

The win over Guilford was just another example of an offense running on all cylinders.

One could have expected that the April chill in the air might have slowed the ‘Hawks down a bit, but in the early going it was a rapid fire attack on the Guilford cage. Before anyone had time to take a breather, the ‘Hawks were ahead 3-0.

O’Sullivan started it off by scooping her own missed shot, circling around in front of the cage, and hammering home her first goal of the game. Erin McDonald followed with a quick shot in front of the crease off a pass from Emily Sheehan. And Collier then scored her first goal off a pass from McDonald.

Whew.

Guilford broke the attack, briefly, with a goal that took the Newtown defense – and goaltender Sarah Dacey – a little bit by surprise. But the ‘Hawks then reeled off five goals in a row to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

Goals from Katherine Moberg (off a restart in front of the crease), Collier (off a pass from Kate Ryan), O’Sullivan (scooping up a loose ball and racing unchallenged to the cage), Moberg again (off a pass from Ryan and with a nice spin move), and then Collier again (off another pass from Ryan) knocked Guilford right back on its heels.

And the ‘Hawks were far from through in the first half.

After Guilford answered the barrage with a quick goal, finished the first half with four more goals to take a 12-2 lead . . . O’Sullivan (off a pass from Collier), Meg Anderson (off a restart), Ryan (to go along with her three assists), and O’Sullivan again.

The healthy 10-goal lead allowed the clock to run continuously in the second half, with no stoppages, and allowed coach Sarah Patrick to give her starters more time off and the younger players more time in the game. Collier and Moberg both scored in the second half, both times off assists from O’Sullivan, for the only Newtown goals.

Moberg finished the day with three goals while McDonald, Ryan and Anderson finished with one apiece.

Sarah Dacey had a remarkeable game in the cage, stoning Guilford on several occasions to keep the rout going.

The win over Guilford came 10 days – thanks to inclement weather – after a 14-4 win over Windsor. In that game, Collier, McDonald and Ryan all scored three goals apiece while Moberg and Morgan Pacheco scored two goals each. Anderson added one.

Collier, meanwhile, added three assists while O’Sullivan and Jen Logan had one assist each.

The ‘Hawks were set to host Cheshire on Thursday at 4 pm and were scheduled to host Canterbury on Saturday. On Monday, May 1, the ‘Hawks will entertain West Haven at 4 pm.
