Coasting To Victory — Newtown High Lacrosse And Tennis Teams Keep Rolling

By Andy Hutchison

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ lacrosse and tennis teams put together successful weeks, with all four squads winning each of their competitions.

Lacrosse Results

The girls’ lacrosse team had only one game in the final week of April, and toppled Bethel 20-6 at Treadwell Park behind four goals and two assists by Kaitlin Brophy and a three-goal performance by Erin Kenning. Meredith Bridges, Meghan Carney, Julia Trudell, and Riley Wurtz all scored twice. Jill Jagoe stopped all three shots she faced in relief, and the NHS defense blanked Bethel in the second half. Newtown improved to 6-1 overall.

The boys blanked Pomperaug of Southbury 18-0 at Blue and Gold Stadium on April 21 and won 19-4 at Bethel on April 26. In the win over Pomperaug, Lewis Thompson had five goals and five assists for a whopping ten points to lead the Nighthawks. Colby Summerlin registered five tallies and added an assist, and Justin Brophy logged two goals and set up four other to also take home a six-point effort. Trey Trudell and Will Northrop each scored a goal and had a pair of assists, and Dan Hebert, Tom Murphy, Brendan McNamara, and Matt Genovese also scored. McNamara had nine of Newtown’s 50 ground ball scoops. The Nighthawks erupted for 11 first-quarter goals and led 15-0 at halftime.

Against Bethel, Thompson logged another five-goal performance and, along with Hebert who had two goals and five assists, finished with seven points. Trudell had three goals and an assist.
